WHRO: “Senior homelessness is increasing. Advocates say the troubling trend has been building for years.”

Members of the LASEV team were interviewed for a recent article by WHRO’s Toby Cox on the recent increase in senior homelessness both in Hampton Roads and nationally. Deputy Director and Director of Litigation Melissa Bonfiglio emphasized in her comments that the root of the issue is the lack of affordable housing in our area.

In her article, Ms. Cox shares the stories of two disabled seniors who are struggling to find a place to live after their landlord chose not to renew their lease. The stories of Ms. Montague and Mr. Cox are not unique. According to research cited by WHRO, people 55 and older make up about a third of the homeless population.
