Apply For Services
Need Free Legal Help?
There are four ways to apply.
- Call our Central Intake Line at (757) 827-5078 between 9:00 and 1:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays.
- Walk into one of our locations and complete a walk-in application. Check the walk in hours at each location by visiting our Locations page. Completing a walk in application does not guarantee that you will be able to speak with an attorney that day.
- Complete an application at one of our outreach events. See our calendar.
Apply online at laseva.org. Once you complete an online application, a member of our Community Support Team still has to call you to complete your application so please look out for a call from us. Do NOT do an online application if you have a court date within 7 business days or if your matter is an emergency such as a lack of heat/lack of water, you have been locked out, or you have received a 72-hour writ of eviction from the Sheriff. Instead, call our Central Intake Line or complete a walk in application. At this time, we are unable to accept web applications.

To get help from the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, you have to meet certain eligibility requirements. We will need income information for each adult in the household, and if you are a Legal Permanent Resident, we will need a copy of your LPR card.
You cannot apply for someone else unless you have a Power of Attorney or you are that person’s legal guardian.
If you live in Virginia but outside of our immediate service area and your legal matter is within our service area, you can apply for services directly. If you live outside of Virginia, please visit the I Need Legal Help website to find your local legal aid. They will need to complete a referral for you.
Before applying, please note that LASEV is unable to assist with criminal matters, personal injury, medical malpractice, delinquent tax matters, matters related to slander and/or defamation, or traffic matters. We assist in civil legal matters only. Legal Aid does not provide financial assistance for the payment of rent.
