The Fair Housing Act protects people with disabilities. It says landlords must allow changes to your home that make it safer and easier to live in. If your landlord receives subsidies from the government, they usually have to pay for these changes.
One of our clients had several surgeries that affected his balance. He asked the landlord to install grab bars in his bathroom. Even with proof of his medical condition, the landlord said no, claiming the disability wasn’t permanent.
Our team got involved. After we sent demand letters asking the landlord to follow the law, they agreed to install the grab bars—and pay for them.
